Hooray for Indiana!

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryDespite all of the pressure and coercion brought against the Republican legislators in the state of Indiana, and despite the vile threats U.S. President Donald Trump had brought against the state and its people, the Indiana state senators voted against Trump’s plan to gerrymander the districts of Indiana’s counties so that the Democrats would be shut out of the mid-term elections happening in 2026. I have to commend the bravery and determination not to mention the principle that the Republican legislators stood on in not doing this. Not only was the whole state threatened with de-funding by Trump and the national Republican Party, but I am sure there were also threats on the very lives of those Republican legislators by the minions of Trump’s insane followers who resisted Trump. Trump in their eyes had threatened and insulted them way too many times.

We have to remember that Trump threatened to have his followers hang literally his own former vice- president and Indiana native Mike Pence back on January 6, 2021. Indiana residents I know are still very sore about this insult by Trump. Obviously Trump is still rubbing insults against Indiana for Pence following the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law. The fact that Indiana has risen up and is also defying Trump by following their own state constitution and the rule of law has infuriated Trump further. Trump has threatened to cut off all funding to Indiana for state projects and even for emergency aid. Additionally, Trump has threatened to de-fund Indiana’s national guard so it cannot help the people in the state in case of state emergencies. Trump is showing the vile, shallow nature of his very soul.

However, I believe that the state legislators and the people of Indiana are risking the wrath of Trump for a political world of Life After Trump (LAT). Indiana state legislators believe they can survive Trump, and they are now considering the long-term plan of trying to build and rebuild Indiana long after Trump is gone. They are going on the premise that if, IF somehow Trump survives to 2029, he will be gone and Indiana will want to build out its industries, its high-tech sector, and its agri-business. The good people of Indiana realize there is no life with Trump, and the Republican Party of Indiana has to go a very different direction. This direction will have to be the Indiana state constitution, the U.S. Constitution, and the rule of law. This will be the only way to build Indiana.

I have been to Indiana many times, and it is a beautiful state. While a much more conservative state than Illinois, it has a lot going for it. The Indiana legislators have already seen the ruin and lawlessness of the Trump government not only in Washington, D.C. but in other Republican-run states and they do not want this. Trump may try to wreak havoc against Indiana, but people in the state are looking at a future in terms of five or ten years. Five or ten years long after Trump and his sick rightwing minions are long gone. The good people of Indiana do not want to see their state wrecked by a madman in the White House. If the overall national Republican Party is smart, they will NOT follow Trump’s orders to wreck Indiana either. Doing any harm to Indiana will mean devastating losses for the Republicans in the mid-term elections in 2026 and the presidential election in 2028. Of course, the national Republican Party has been a major disappointment so far. It is a hope, but hopefully a future national Republican Party will look like the Republican Party of Indiana—one driven by principle rather than one-man rule.
