Render Onto Caesar What is Caesar’s
By Daniel Nardini
Yet here we are with someone who sees himself as more than president. With one exception, NO living president has ever put their image on either the coinage or currency of the United States of America. The reason is not hard to figure out—America and Americans of the past did not want someone with absolute power and authority over them. A living ruler in their minds who could put his portrait on anything represented an absolute ruler with no limitations and no regards for the rights as enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. To this end, it was a tradition and then a law whereby NO living president could be on the coins and currency of the United States until they had long passed away. This law is known as the Thayer Amendment passed in 1866. The law stipulates that a president can only be put on the coinage and currency at least three years after they have passed away. A living president and certainly NOT a sitting president can be on any U.S. money.
This brings us back to the Trump gold coin. Besides this coin being a gaudy, obscene piece, it skirts the rule of living or sitting presidents being on any of the coinage and currency because this is a non-circulating coin. The rules are different in this case. Still, a sitting president has an ethical principle to stand on. Making a graven image of themselves while they are still in office is narcissism in the worst possible way. And Trump is most certainly the most narcissist president we have ever had. I have heard where there was case of a sitting president having been put on American coinage, and that was former U.S. President Calin Coolidge (30th president of the United States). In this case, the authorization to put Coolidge on a commemorative coin was done by the U.S. Congress because Coolidge WAS the current president then. The commemorative coin, which celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, had the portraits of both first U.S. President George Washington and Calvin Coolidge to commemorate the United States as a whole up to that point. The Trump coin only seems to commemorate Trump.
Trump has tried to get his image on any and all circulating coins because of his megalomania. In my view, he does NOT deserve to be on any U.S. coinage or currency now or at any time in the future. He is the reason why the American Revolution was fought—to not have another absolute ruler. So far, he has failed to get his image on any other U.S. coinage. There has been a lot of fightback against this. If he ever succeeds on getting his sick image on any U.S. money, I for one will throw it into the gutter where it belongs.
