Bank of America announced that the Art Institute of Chicago will receive a critical grant to conserve Pablo Picasso’s painting, The Old Guitarist. It is one of 18 projects worldwide to receive funding this year through the company’s Art Conservation ProjectTM (ACP). The Old Guitarist by Pablo Picasso (1903–1904) holds a singular place within the Art Institute of Chicago as the earliest work by the artist in its collection. Acquired in 1926, it quickly became a beloved cornerstone of the museum’s holdings. Created in Barcelona during Picasso’s Blue Period, the painting reflects his use of a restrained, monochromatic palette and his exploration of themes of human suffering and isolation. Since 2010, the Art Conservation ProjectTM has conserved over 15,000 objects in 40 countries, helping safeguard iconic works that are vulnerable to time and environmental stress. All conserved works will return to public display, reinforcing BofA’s commitment to public access.
