On Wednesday, October 28th, Cook County and City of Chicago officials came together to celebrate Día de Los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”). In attendance was Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and Commissioners Frank J. Aguilar, Alma Anaya, and Jessica Vasquez. Joining from the City of Chicago was First Deputy of Immigrant, Migrant, and Refugee Rights Jesus Del Toro.  After remarks from elected officials, attendees were given the opportunity to place photos at the ofrenda to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. This is the sixth consecutive year that officials have celebrated Día de Los Muertos with an ofrenda in the Cook County Lobby.  Held annually on November 1st and 2nd, Día de Los Muertos is a traditional Meso-American holiday dedicated to the ancestors; it honors both death and the cycle of life. It is observed as a day to honor deceased family members and loved ones by “welcoming them back” through various customs, including making dedicated altars (ofrendas), laying out special food offerings, and visiting their graves.
