Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka saluted the commitment of the members of the United States Coast Guard Honor Guard stationed in Metro East, which, above and beyond their normal day to day responsibilities, dedicate their time to perform Military Funeral Honors for veterans and fallen soldiers.

As part of the Illinois Office of the Comptroller’s “Veteran’s Day” at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, Topinka presented groups and individuals from throughout the state with proclamations celebrating their achievements and dedication. Topinka specifically congratulated Health Service 2 Margaret Duncan and Yeoman Third Class Julia Garcia of the United States Coast Guard.

Although stationed in St. Louis, MO, this United States Coast Guard unit is responsible for many parts of central and downstate Illinois, performing Military Funeral Honors to Illinois servicemen and women. Military Funeral Honors are dedicated to veterans and fallen soldiers and consist of the playing of Taps, a Farewell Salute, and the folding and presentation of the American Flag to the next of kin.
