The level of viciousness against Mexico and Mexicans is reaching new lows with the Republican presidential debates that were recently held. The worst of them, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, was especially nasty in how he said he would “resolve the problem of the illegals.” In his recently unveiled plan, he would deport all the undocumented, strip all children born in the United States of their citizenship if one or more of their parents were “illegal,” and probably deport whole families. At a conservative estimate we are talking about 20 million or more people!
Of course, no mention is made about how this mass ethnic cleansing will cost, nor how a President Donald Trump (ugh!) would reverse not only the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution but reverse the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1898 ruling that all children born in the United States are Americans. To tone up the rhetoric to truly ugly levels, Trump also advocated building an actual wall (like the Great Wall of China) across the U.S.-Mexico border and have Mexico actually fund part of its construction! How sick and depraved can this whole issue get?! First, I wish to say that I hope we NEVER see a Trump presidency. We might as well have Ivan the Terrible running America. Second, Trump seems to think that all of the undocumented are coming from Mexico.
Fact is the undocumented come from many countries, of which Mexico is only one. And they do not come here to rape, pillage or murder Americans (of course, there are criminal undocumented just like there are criminals in America and elsewhere). They come to generally make a better living and hopefully have a better future. They also come to escape persecution and wars—the pattern followed by many immigrants for centuries before and after the United States came into being. While the majority of undocumented may come from Mexico (50 percent), the number of undocumented from Mexico and Central America is in fact declining. The growing number of immigrants, and with it, undocumented, are now coming from Asia. The Asian undocumented make up at least 12 percent of the whole percentage of undocumented in the United States.
Building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border will do nothing to stop the Asian undocumented from coming. In fact, Asian immigration is the fastest growing factor for all immigrants to the United States today. These immigrants, and also in that number the undocumented, are primarily coming from China, India, the Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), and Vietnam. In order to stop this immigration, we would have to build walls along the east and west U.S. coasts. But hey, making the whole immigration issue one gigantic sounding board for empty-headed ideas and lame-brain political candidates is what some debates have become. I can only hope (against reality) that more serious and careful consideration will be advanced on dealing with the immigration issue in later presidential debates.
