125 High School Seniors Selected as Edison Scholars

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Education Demonstrating its commitment to educational excellence, Edison International awarded $1.25 million to fund scholarships for 125 high school seniors selected as Edison Scholars, the company’s annual scholarship program. The 125 scholarships reflect the company’s landmark 125th anniversary this year. Each student received up to $10,000 in scholarships, beginning with a $2,500 college scholarship that is renewable for an additional three years. The 125 seniors selected were among more than 900 public and private high school seniors, in 14 states, who applied for the scholarships. Edison International has awarded more than $3.2 million in scholarships to 464 Edison Scholars since 1993. Among the Edison Scholars in Chicago were:

Evelyn Corona, 18, from Benito Juarez High School, will be going to Northeastern Illinois University majoring in mathematics. She plans to become a teacher. She had perfect attendance, was on the honor roll, and is part of the National Honor Society. She’s also on the student council and varsity soccer team.

Victor Medina, 18, from Benito Juarez High School, will be attending the Illinois Institute of Technology majoring in mechanical engineering. He was first chair clarinet in the school band; a science fair city finalist, won math awards and he enjoys video production and editing and journalism.

Natasha Antunez, 18, from Infinity Math, Science and Technology High School, will be majoring in engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She’s a member of the National Honor Society, was on the honor roll, member of the academic decathlon team, participated in swimming and track teams, and volunteered for a breast cancer awareness walk.

Israel Loeza, 18, from Benito Juarez High School, will be attending Northeastern Illinois University majoring in computer science. He’s a member of the National Honor Society and member of the school’s robotics team. He enjoys playing the guitar, playing soccer and likes philosophy and astronomy.
