Representatives of the Organized communities Against Deportations (OCAD) and Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100) blocked traffic outside of City Hall Tuesday afternoon with life size art installations depicting Mayor Emanuel and City Council’s “failure” policies towards immigrant detentions and misspending taxes. Protestors chanted “Chicago is not our sanctuary” throughout the rally while questioning Emanuel’s “Sanctuary” status, pointing to the $96 million police academy for the department that “spent $55 million of taxpayer money spent on paying fines and legal costs of police misconduct,” stated one protestor. During the rally, the groups also highlight the Mayor’s “inability to strengthen the Welcoming City Ordinance to remove the current exemptions and the role of the Chicago Police Department in wrongfully adding immigrants to the Chicago Gang Database.”
