Six out of the ten students selected to participate in the International STEM Academy for Social Impact in Medellin, Colombia are Morton East students and recent alumni. The students will be conducting an Underwater ROV Water Quality Research project, present and facilitate a STEM session at the annual STEM+H Conference in Medellin. This project will take place during the dates of August 18th through August 27th, 2019. Through this amazing opportunity, the students selected among TRIO Upward Bound participants will engage Medellin students to explore different STEM fields. This will be the second group of students sponsored by NEIU’s TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science Program to travel out of state this summer. “I couldn’t be prouder of these students’ accomplishments. Not only are they demonstrating their academic abilities through their participation in the rigorous projects in the TRIO program, they are sharing their expertise in the higher education arena across the globe. Just visiting some of these destinations would be life altering; our students go to leave their mark. Their skills and initiative are truly amazing,” said Mr. Truesdale, District 201’s Superintendent. Only the students that have been in the program for more than two years that have presented in STEAM conferences, and have participated in projects such as VEX Robotics, Underwater Robotics, Mexican Folkloric, Maker Space, Summer Program and Saturday Academy, were eligible for travel.
