Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Local NewsCongressman Jesús “Chuy” García, joined local elected officials and advocates on Wednesday afternoon to hold a press conference urging President Joe Biden and his administration to expand parole and work permits for both new migrants and long-term immigrant workers. The officials will also call on the administration to provide additional support for the Chicago region and Illinois to address the needs of recently arrived migrants.

“We are here today to make sure our city and our nation live up to its creed, this morning we convene with over 35 organizations and representatives who champion immigrants and immigration rights…they have rolled up their sleeve to do just that…not just this past year, but have done so for over 50 years,” said Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García. “We recognize that immigration is inherent in our roots and in our future, we understand the difference that stable programs and support services makes for mix status and immigrant families.

We believe that we all have a shared responsibility in lending a hand in stepping up for long term and recent immigrants…we all deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect. Let’s not forget that Illinois and Chicagoland is home to the fourth largest immigrant population in the U.S. and how can we forget,” Congressman García stated.

“Illinois immigrants contribute to $9.8 billion in federal taxes and $5.2 billion in state and local taxes, immigrants have done their part. And it is time the administration does there part. That’s why, in partnership with state and local electives, as well as advocates, we are calling on President Biden and the federal agencies to take immediate action.” Congressman García urged the Biden administration to increase federal funding. “One, we call for an increase in federal funding for food and shelter services, we deserve our fair share. Second, we call for an increase in federal funding for legal services to help families apply,” said the Congressman. “Last, we call on President Biden to take executive action. With the stroke of his pen, he can expand and expedite work permits to help people stabilize their stay here. Many of my constituents have worked and paid taxes for years, but still live without the freedom that comes from the work permit.”

In attendance was State Representative Theresa Mah who vocalized her support to expand migrant services. “I am proud to represent a diverse community. A lot of immigrant friendly policies have made Illinois one of the friendliest states in the nation. I stand here in support of the efforts of Congressman García at the federal level and support the efforts of local elected officials.”
