On the first day of Early Voting, Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza endorsed Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim to replace her as Comptroller, citing Kim’s extensive financial experience, work on the Comptroller’s Bank On Commission and progressive people-first values. Mendoza was sworn in as Comptroller Dec. 5, 2016, after a race in which she was outspent $10 million to $4 million. She previously served as Chicago City Clerk and a 6-term state legislator. In the most recent statewide election, Mendoza was the top vote-getter with 2,331,714 votes. Kim has served as treasurer of Illinois’ 3rd-largest county since 2018 and won twice the number of votes being elected county treasurer than all three of her opponents combined in their respective elections for their current legislative offices.

“I’ve known Holly Kim for ten years and one thing everyone should know about Holly is that she shows up and she comes prepared. There’s no learning curve with Holly. Her financial experience doing the work of a comptroller in Lake County coupled with her service at my office’s Bank On commission, makes her far and away the most qualified candidate to take on this job. I know Holly, she’s not running for this office to leave in four years to jump to the next best thing. She wants to do the work, and that’s what Illinoisans deserve,” said Comptroller Mendoza.

“I’ve long looked up to Comptroller Mendoza as my work mentor. Not only have I learned the ins and outs of the Comptroller’s office from her, but I’ve also been inspired by her leadership and her fierce independence on behalf of the taxpayers. Susana has accomplished tremendous things as Comptroller–she took over an office that was in shambles, rebuilt it and secured ten credit upgrades. It would be my honor to continue her great work as the chief fiscal watchdog of the state,” said Kim.
